New on SI: Patriots Bench Cam Newton as Offense Struggles Against Bills

Image
Newton was replaced by Jarrett Stidham after throwing for just 34 yards on 10 attempts. The Patriots benched quarterback Cam Newton in the second half of their matchup with the Bills on Monday night. Newton struggled mightily before getting replaced by Jarrett Stidham in the third quarter. He threw for just 34 yards on 10 attempts, failing to find the end zone in the air as the Bills opened up a double-digit lead.  Monday's struggles continued a trend of poor performances from Newton. He has thrown just one touchdown in his last five games, throwing for 2,381 yards in 13 starts.  Stidham couldn't exactly get the Patriots offense back on track after Newton's benching. Buffalo entered the fourth quarter with a 31-9 lead, blowing past the Patriots as Josh Allen tallied a quartet of touchdown passes. Allen's 34 touchdowns in 2020 are the most in franchise history.  New England entered Monday night third in the AFC East at 6–8. Bill Belichick and Co. will miss...

Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters Monday evening that L.A. is planning to sign veteran quarterback Blake Bortles off the Broncos' practice squad. Image
The Washington Football Team and Philadelphia Eagles will meet on Sunday Night Football with the NFC East on the line for Washington. The game between the Washington Football Team and Philadelphia Eagles will be aired at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday Night Football . Washington clinches the division title with a win. A loss means that the winner of the Cowboys-Giants game, which will start in New York at 1 p.m. ET, would be division champs. There are other games with playoff implications next weekend. In the AFC, the Titans, Dolphins, Ravens and Browns are all in with a win. If one of them loses, then the Colts would be in with a win over the Jaguars. In the NFC, the Rams and Bears are in with wins over the Cardinals and Packers, respectively. The Cardinals need to win and the Bears to lose to earn a wild card bid. If the Bears lose, they can still get in if Arizona als...

New on SI: Updated NFL Playoff Picture Following Week 16

Image
With just one week left in the regular season, the NFL's postseason picture is becoming clearer. Don't look now, but the Dallas Cowboys' path into the playoffs is still open heading into the last week of the regular season. An eventful NFL Sunday altered the league's playoff picture, with the Cowboys' 37-17 win over the Eagles eliminating Philadelphia from contention and setting up a Week 17 in which Washington (6-9), Dallas (6-9) and the New York Giants (5-10) all have a chance at winning the NFC East. Here's a look at the current playoff picture for both conferences, with a breakdown of how the field could change based on Week 17 outcomes. AFC 1. Kansas City Chiefs — 14-1 (clinched a first-round bye and home field advantage) 2. Pittsburgh Steelers — 12-3 (clinched division) 3. Buffalo Bills — 11-3 (clinched division) 4. Tennessee Titans — 10-4 5. Miami Dolphins — 10-5 6. Baltimore Ravens — 10-5 7. Cleveland Browns — 10-5 Here's what we know: ...

New on SI: Dwayne Haskins Benched in Washington's Loss to Panthers

Image
Haskins threw for just 154 yards with two interceptions on 28 attempts on Sunday. Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins was benched in the second half of a 20-13 loss to the Panthers on Sunday.  Haskins threw for just 154 yards with two interceptions on 28 attempts before he was pulled with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. Second-year quarterback Taylor Heinicke was able to boost Washington's offense to a degree. He completed 12-of-19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown with three carries for 22 yards, but Washington still fell to 6–9 in 2020. Washington has now dropped back-to-back games after a four-game winning streak. Ron Rivera's club still controls its fate in the NFC East, with a win against Philadelphia in Week 17 giving Washington the division title.  The Football Team has finished under .500 in each of the last four seasons. The franchise has not won a playoff game since 2005.

New on SI: Of Course, the Browns Couldn't Make Things Easy on Themselves

Image
The Browns added a distinctly 2020 chapter to their tortured history and now need a win in Week 17 to clinch a playoff berth. While we all adjust to life in a world where the Jets are unstoppable, but only against legitimate playoff-caliber teams jostling for a postseason berth late in the season, let us take comfort in a fact that endures amid the most upside-down aspects of society today. The Browns were always going to make this more difficult than they needed to. This , of course, being the effort to snap the NFL’s longest ongoing postseason drought. And yes, Sunday’s loss to the Jets was under exceptional circumstances. The team’s entire passing game was sidelined due to COVID-19 close contacts, leaving Baker Mayfield’s passing options beyond his tight end and running backs nonexistent. It was also the kind of moment that transcends all of the team’s newfound competence and success. What was displayed on Sunday was the very type of football that Cleveland had worked so hard to...

New on SI: FitzMagic Replaces Tua, Eliminates Raiders From Playoffs in Chaotic Dolphins Win

Image
Ryan Fitzpatrick replaced the rookie Tua Tagovailoa in the fourth quarter and led the Dolphins to a wild win over the Raiders. For the second time in as many months, Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was benched after a shaky performance. This time, the move resulted in a wild win that knocked out the Raiders from playoff contention. Ryan Fitzpatrick found Mack Hollins on a 34-yard completion with 12 seconds left in the game. A facemask penalty on the play pushed Miami into field goal range, and Jason Sanders drilled a 44-yard kick to give the Dolphins a 26-25 win. With just under 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter and Miami trailing, 16-13, head coach Brian Flores opted to go with the veteran Fitzpatrick under center. To that point, Tagovailoa was 17-for-22 for 94 yards and a touchdown, and was sacked three times. The move came after three consecutive three-and-out drives for Miami, as the Raiders' defense imposed its will on the rookie-led offense. Fitz...

New on SI: 2021 Offseason Outlook: New England Patriots

Image
How will Bill Belichick and the Patriots rebound from a down season? Quarterback isn't the only big question. Our perception of how an NFL team should go through its internal checklist after a bad season is at once probably far too optimistic and not optimistic enough. There are some owners who steep their organizations in complacency. Some who are more comfortable with the familiar. Some who blow it all up because some middling former quarterback on ESPN told them to. Perpetually good teams don’t normally have that problem because they are good at self-analysis. Of course, some teams get good for a little while and lose the ability to do that as well. So that’s why we’re here. With each team that drops from playoff contention, we will answer a 10-part questionnaire on where they are, where they’re headed and how to fix the holes along the way. Some projects will be bigger than others. Which brings us to the Patriots, a team that has only missed the playoffs three times in the ...

New on SI: 2021 NFL Pro Bowl Rosters: Snubs, Highlights and Observations

Image
There won't be a Pro Bowl in 2021, but a selection to the roster can still mean a lot to the players. Here's who should feel good and who has a right to feel snubbed. The 2021 Pro Bowl will not take place this year, though it always made sense to announce the team anyway given the various financial commitments and contract incentives that are tied to the league’s yearly All-Star festivities. This game carries a massive weight regardless of how cynical we’ve all become in regard to the actual quality of play. Perhaps one day we’ll be able to streamline the voting process, so it becomes less a popularity and recognition contest and more about which players are dominating on the field and carrying their respective teams. I covered a handful of Pro Bowls when I worked for the NFL and I was always struck by how significant it was from a player perspective. When you are on location surrounded by your peers and their families, there is something regal about the whole thing. An ack...

And the standard has been and always will be set; and unfortunately we (I) did not live up to what that standard was at all times or consistently enough !!” The Patriots' 22-12 loss on Sunday to the Dolphins marks the end of a postseason appearance streak that dates back to 2008-09. Newton threw for 209 yards in the defeat, failing to record either a touchdown or an interception.  “With that being said the answers are in the locker room and one thing I do know about this bunch is that this locker ro...
