In fact, one reason Doug Marrone was able to win the promotion from interim coach was because he was pragmatic in his thought the process, and willing to try and get Bor...

New on SI: 'Hard Knocks' Recap: Full-Pad Scrimmages Begin as Roster Decisions Loom

Image
With roster cuts on the horizon, the Rams and Chargers strap on full pads for the first time in episode three of 'Hard Knocks.' In the absence of preseason games, the typical  Hard Knocks  week-to-week structure is being challenged this year. The preseason schedule lends itself to a perfectly fluid arc for each season of the show: an episode begins with practices and meetings, culminating with a game against a different team, followed by roster cuts, where we learn the fates of players we've grown to care about during the show's run. It's a tried and true method that's proven effective for the previous 14 seasons of the show. Constraints breed creativity, though, and the show's producers have had to work with what they've got. In episode three, we finally got to see full-pads practices, with the Rams even playing a live scrimmage at the sparking new SoFi Stadium. New on SI: Tom Brady Is Already Making his Younger Buccaneers Teammates More Confident

Image
As Albert Breer's camp trip winds down, he empties the notebook with observations from Bucs, Eagles and Giants camp. Plus, rules for scouts during the pandemic, the Packers speak out and more. FLORIDA— Yup, that’s right. A lot of Florida today, from Tampa to Fort Lauderdale. I’m wrapping up my camp trip , so let’s dive in … • One thing that continually came up when I was with the Bucs the last two days: how Tom Brady is instilling confidence in the team’s younger skill guys. From Scottie Miller to O.J. Howard, the coaches and front office are seeing jumps they hadn’t previously, at least in part as a result of Brady’s presence. And as I heard this, I kept thinking about how, in New England, skill players would arrive from elsewhere and, if they clicked with Brady early, pretty quickly put up big numbers. Randy Moss. Wes Welker. Chris Hogan. Danny Woodhead. And on and on. Now, that should be working in reverse, with Brady coming to them rather than those guys coming to him. It’...

Image
Ten teams and the league office got a chance to learn about how they'd handle positive tests en masse during the season. Plus, Sam Darnold's development, Joe Judge's laps policy, Earl Thomas's release and Jason Wright's big job ahead. The sun was barely up over Ohio when Browns senior vice president of player health and development Joe Sheehan got word that a rash of positive tests were coming back from Saturday morning’s daily screening. Players. Coaches. Staffers. As the team’s appointed infection control officer, Sheehan was both stunned and sent straight into action to call all those who came up on the list. Next? With Cleveland’s players due in for 8:30 a.m. meetings, decisions had to be made. And by 6:30 a.m. ET, a big one came down—the team was closing its facility for the day, and started working on a deep cleaning and a plan for everyone to work from home. “You just sort of have to whip out your plan,” is how one staffer described it. Soon enough, the ...
