But it stands to reason the rule will be a point of debate this offseason.  "Overall the results were not great," Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy said Monday, per ESPN's Kevin Seifert . New on SI: Joe Burrow Jokes About Retiring After Report on Hand Size Measurement

Joe Burrow isn't too concerned about a report on his hand size measurements at the NFL combine. Joe Burrow is taking matters into his own hands. After ESPN reported that his hand size was measured at 9 inches at the NFL combine, Burrow joked about the news on Twitter. "Considering retirement after I was informed the football will be slipping out of my tiny hands. Please keep me in your thoughts," Burrow said. After Burrow fired off his tweet, Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, who also played at LSU, and Chiefs quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes shared some jokes. Burrow certainly didn't have a hard time holding onto the football last season when he led LSU to a national championship . He finished the season throwing for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns, broke multiple SEC passing records and won the Heisman Trophy . Burrow, an Ohio native, is expected to be selected No. 1 overall in the NFL draft by the Bengals .  It looks l...

On Thursday, NFL owners voted in New York City to accept the negotiated terms for a new CBA. Houston Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt made his thoughts on the NFL's possible new collective bargaining agreement explicitly clear on Thursday.  "Hard no on that proposed CBA," he tweeted. On Thursday, NFL owners voted in New York City to accept the negotiated terms for a new CBA . The players will reportedly discuss whether to accept these same terms on Friday, and a new CBA could potentially be ratified before the start of the new league year on March 18. Two-thirds of the 32 player reps, and a majority of all NFL players, would need to approve the terms for a new CBA. The new proposal includes expanding the NFL's regular-season schedule to 17 games, which wouldn't go into effect until 2021 at the earliest. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier this week that the proposal would also boost the sport's postseason from six teams per conference to seven. ...

New on SI: No Ruling Reached in Hearing on Possible Release of Saints Emails to Church

An attorney for New Orleans’ Roman Catholic archdiocese Thursday strongly defended the Saints’ behind-the-scenes help in dealing with the clergy sex abuse crisis. NEW ORLEANS — An attorney for New Orleans’ Roman Catholic archdiocese Thursday strongly defended the New Orleans Saints’ behind-the-scenes help in dealing with the clergy sex abuse crisis, saying the legal effort to release hundreds of confidential emails between them is aimed at trying to shame those “who had the audacity” to back the church. Claims that the NFL team’s public relations help was improper are “nothing more than a clear attack on the Catholic faith and the Catholic Church for wrongs of the past that the church has acknowledged,” attorney E. Dirk Wegmann argued. He added that the emails are private and “should not be parsed through simply for the purpose of annoying or embarrassing — or bringing public scrutiny on — individuals who supported the church.” The impassioned remarks came amid a court hearing on...

New on SI: NFL Owners Approve Principal Terms of New CBA, Now Players Must Vote

Image
It's clear the owners would like to get the new CBA approved quickly so they can turn their attention to the new TV rights deals, but will the players agree to the proposal currently on the table? NEW YORK—NFL team owners briskly left a hotel in downtown Manhattan late Thursday afternoon, having approved the principal terms for a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement with the players. The attention now turns to the NFL Players Association, which will discuss on Friday whether to approve these same terms, negotiated between the NFL and the players union over the past 10 months. The vote to approve was not unanimous among the 32 clubs, per a source with knowledge of the results. Notable changes among the terms voted upon include expanding the playoff field to include one extra team from each conference, for a total of 14 teams in the postseason, starting in 2020; a 17-game regular season with three preseason games, which would be instituted no earlier than 2021; and an inc...

New on SI: Why an Expanded NFL Postseason Is a Good Thing

Expanding the NFL playoffs increases the rarity and advantage of the first-round bye and makes the end of the season more competitive. Shut up nerds, letting another team into the postseason is a good thing. ESPN reported on Wednesday night that under the new collective bargaining agreement, the NFL would allow a seventh team into the playoffs for each conference, which would give only the top seed in each division a bye. The changes would likely take effect this season. In the immediate moments of a major format change, we often reveal our hypocritical duality. We beg the stagnant professional sports leagues that command our attention to do something interesting and then the moment they do, we become defenders of some traditional set of values that have, all of a sudden, become integral to our lives like some kind of party-switching politician. Last week, when the New York Post reported that Major League Baseball was toying with the idea of forcing the top seed in each division t...

New on SI: Report: Rams to Promote Sophie Luoto to Director of Football Operations

The move makes Sophie Luoto one of the highest-ranking female executives in the sport. The Los Angeles Rams are promoting Sophie Luoto to director of football operations, according to Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson. The move would make Luoto one of the highest-ranking female executives in the sport.  Luoto, per Robinson, was previously the team's manager of football administration.  During the 2018 season, Luoto received one of four game balls from head coach Sean McVay following the team's 36–31 win over Seattle, a game that came in the wake of the devastating California wildfires. NBC Sports' Peter King wrote of the acknowledgement, noting that Luoto was among other members of the organizations football administration and operations team that helped players and their families find lodging, "reunited families, found a Saturday practice facility, and kept the train moving." The Rams' move comes just weeks after the Browns named Callie Brownson as t...

New on SI: Report: NFL Postseason Could Expand to 14 Teams in New CBA

The NFL postseason might be expanding as soon as next year. The NFL postseason might be expanding as soon as next season. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the NFL and the NFLPA's current new collective bargaining agreement proposal would boost the sport's postseason from six teams per conference to seven. In addition, only one team from each conference would receive a first-round bye, according to Schefter, as opposed to two. The new CBA, per Schefter, could be completed "sometime in the next week" and the postseason format changes would take effect in the 2020 season. "That's been agreed to for a long time," one source familiar with the CBA talks told ESPN. "There wasn't a lot of disagreement to that issue." The sides are reportedly still trying to figure out a number of issues, including the length of the regular season schedule. Schefter reports that the parties have not yet agreed on a 17-game campaign and that it wouldn...
